In parish ministry

Eighteen sisters in Valais: the Mother House in Sion, and small communities in the parishes nearby.

The Mother House chapel in spring, in Sion

After the classroom

For close to a century, the Ursulines of Sion ran the girls’ orphanage, the teacher training college and domestic science schools across the canton. After years devoted to educating the young, most of them took up a mission in parish or diocesan ministry — often as retirement drew near.

The form of the commitment changed, not its nature. From the Mother House as from the parish communities, the sisters go on walking alongside people: children, young adults, the elderly, families who have come from elsewhere.

01

04

Serving the parish

Taking part in the pastoral teams and choirs of the parishes nearby.

“To care for whatever is true, noble, just, pure and lovely, so that every value may be given to the glory of God.”

The Constitutions

Living the fraternity of the Gospel

In a pluralist world, the Constitutions encourage the sisters to assume the best of others. They learn to discover the riches of different cultures, nationalities, religions and generations. That discovery continues in welcome, in listening, in dialogue — and in the difficulties to be overcome in order to meet another person truthfully.

The community tries to form a core from which human relationships grow. At the threshold of each pastoral year, it asks itself what answers it owes the people it meets: “I was hungry… I was thirsty… I was a stranger” (Mt 25:35-36).
