Sent out on a mission of education

Devoted to a mission of education, the Ursulines serve the local Churches according to the needs of the world today and what their communities are able to give.

One mission, three territories

Each country has its page, and its colour: the blue of the congregation in Switzerland, the amber of the stained glass in Côte d’Ivoire, the green of the Complexe in Guinea.

In parish ministry

After years devoted to the education of the young, most of the Ursulines have taken up a ministry in their parish or diocese. Hospitality, visits to the elderly and to those living alone, preparation for the sacraments, French classes for newcomers, support for asylum seekers.

Meeting the needs of the country

In education: teaching, a hostel for girls, a boarding school, vocational training, farming projects. In health: dispensaries, antenatal and postnatal care, nutrition education. In pastoral work: catechesis, training of lay leaders, movements for children and young people.

An adventure of faith

Settled in the parish of Sérédou since September 2016, the sisters have opened the Complexe Sainte-Ursule there: education within reach, the farming and training centre of Mount Ziama, health care. Ten years celebrated in October 2026.

Listening to the Word

In Jesus, sent by the Father, the Ursulines are sent out to the world of today. When they enter religious life, they consecrate themselves to God at the moment of communion, as a sign that they will carry the tenderness of God wherever they are sent.

Anne de Xainctonge, who founded the Company of Saint Ursula in Dole, wanted sisters “well clothed in Jesus Christ” — for how else could they bear witness to him? Daily prayer and steady reading of the Word allow them to contemplate Jesus praying, teaching, healing, blessing. The sisters’ educational mission continues her insight: to teach girls, without enclosure and free of charge.

For the sisters, to educate is more than to teach: it also lies in a way of welcoming, of looking, of answering, even in the small things of everyday life. What they have received, they give.

“I make myself ready to do what God asks of me.”

I believe in God who sends me

The sisters of Saint Ursula of Sion set down their faith in the mission of education entrusted to them today.

I believe in God, Love, Mercy and Joy, who walks with me each day and reshapes my life for the mission.

I believe in the Triune God who chose me in my weakness, to bear witness to the tenderness of Christ in simplicity and joy.

I believe in God who invites us, in communion with him and with our sisters, to meet others as they are.

I believe in God who calls me to welcome every person, in openness, in listening and in self-giving.
